Most of the motion designers are very aware of the importance of sound design. These advices are for the ones who are still not aware.

  • You think you are also a great sound designer. You are not.
  • Most of the time you make your own sound design because you want to get your piece out there as soon as possible, because there is no time for sound design. Wrong.
  • You think sound design is simply aligning sounds and syncing fx with the video. Wrong.
  • You think your sound designer is overcharging you. You can find the find the FX in free fx websites, you can buy the song from Audio Jungle. Do so.
  • You present references from great projects, then say that yours is due tomorrow. That’s not gonna happen.
  • You do not consider your sound designer’s musical&creative suggestions because you have already watched enough Vimeo videos and listened enough hipster “The …s” bands. Wrong

Big city life and the corporate world simply pushes you into the wheel, where money is the ultimate goal.

I believe it is a dead-end when money is your purpose. Money has to serve a purpose.

Coming from a traditional biology background, I always wanted to give back to the nature which I’m in love passionately.

That’s why I am going for a two week volunteer program to Peru, for an Amazon Basin Research and Conservation Project. I will be assisting fellow biologists on Herpetofauna, tracking and identifying lizard species.

It is going to be awesome. Because there is a purpose!

There is no.

You have to work your ass off. You have to dedicate your time. You have to give more than what you are expected to give.

If you think your job is just another job, then you are just another employee.

Whatever we do, I believe we have an opportunity to make a difference.

So the formula is pretty simple:

Shortcut to Success = There is NO

I usually do not write when I feel bad. If I do not write, I feel bad. This I guess is the writers’ block. Writers’ paradox may be?

Just when you think everything’s in its place, something comes and leaves you with a massive destruction. It is hard to recover when this destruction is emotional.

So I believe, success is the ratio of emotional regeneration ability to the amount of time how fast you can switch to plan B. Hopefully there is a plan B. Is there?

No. There is no plan B. It is just you, your wrecked emotions and the naked truth of life, which goes on regardless of your emotional state. Good luck!

Finally completed my military service,.

There are vast amount memories and lessons learned most of which I will share later. It just feels great to be back, it just feels amazing to be this hungry for music.

patienceIf I summarize this past couple of months, i don’t need more than a word: PATIENCE

By nature, I push things, I get nervous and I turn the things I want to achieve to pressure-makers.

 It is all gone now.

I have more dreams and plans than ever, however I am not rushing things. There’s a plan, and there’s a reasonable time schedule.

It is great to be back, and to be able to continue your dreams from where you’ve left.

Although it implies that I am going for a vacation, the situation is different. :)

In Turkey, military service is still obligatory for every men that reaches the age of 18. You can delay it for some time if you are a grad student like me, but in the end, you have to go.

This is the time I have to go.For 6 months.

I will not be updating this blog of mine or releasing new music. But with my arrival, I’ve got huge projects to initiate.

6 months of disappearance at these days of constant connectivity is almost equal to losing your whole online existance. I know that but there is nothing I could do about it. I’ll try to pick it up from where I left.

So goodbye to all my friends and online family, take care, be good, and see you back in 6 months.

Recovering after a Failure

I laughed a lot when I watched this video. But also I couldn’t help feeling connected to the guy.

When I try something, I go all in. If I fail, I fail big.

The inspirational part of the video is actually after the big fail. When he gets over the shock, he gets up, starts to run again, and dives successfully in the water this time.

And look at the faceplant, look at the place where he fell. His hands and half of his body is touching the water. HE ACTUALLY ALMOST MADE IT!

When you work hard, you always get closer to your target. Even if you fail, you are not at point zero, you made progress. Therefore, I think, most important skill in succeeding is recovery after a failure, not hard-working.

It doesn’t matter how hard you work, if you are unable to complete what you’ve started.

A new concept is born

Sound design as we know it, generally reminds us of recording and manipulating sounds for films. In my opinion, a new sub-category was born with the rise of motion graphics. This sub-category has its own disciplines and techniques, which sets it apart from classical sound design.

Here is a definition from Wikipedia:

Sound design is the process of specifying, acquiring, manipulating or generating audio elements. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including film, theatre, sound recording and reproduction, live music performance, sound art and computer game software development.

Sound DesignAs you see, motion graphics is not involved in the definition.

I had the chance to work with amazing motion graphics artists and was deeply impressed by this art form, which required totally different approach to sound design.

In this series I will write about my experiences and opinions about sound design for motion graphics, and will explain some methods for designing sound.

PopIt really surprises me when I meet with musicians who admit they NEVER EVER listen to mainstream artists.

There is a tendency to make fun of musicians who listen to popular mainstream acts. Especially in rock genre.

In my opinion, this is nonsense.

I carefully listen to most of the radio hits, popular acts, mainstream bands. These people have the money to record in the best studio, hire the best producer, hire the best mixing engineer and master their album with the best mastering engineer.

What you listen is generally, a great production. As a musician, one should not miss this opportunity to scrutinize and learn from it. Even if its out of your genre, there is always a lot to learn.

I have been in rock bands since 1997 and always seen this genre addiction in my fellow musicians. Most of them perished. The ones who do not close their ears to new things, still make good music.
